Call To Worship

Reader: Today, we begin our Advent journey, a time of listening and waiting.

All: We listen to God, and we wait for the coming of Jesus into our lives again.

R: As we wait in hope, hear this promise from the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 2:1-5):

1 This is what Isaiah, son of Amoz, saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
2 In the last days, the mountain of the Lord’s temple
will be established as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.
3 Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.
5 Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord.

Isaiah spoke of a day when all people will go to the mountain of the Lord.

All: There, God will teach us how to live.

R: God will decide what is right.

All: And we will see God’s promises come true.
God of promise and hope, help us to wait
for the fulfilling of Your promise in the coming of Jesus.
Amen.

*Scripture

Luke 1:46-53 (NIV)

46 And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me - holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.
