Call To Worship

Reader: Our Advent journey of listening and waiting continues.

All: We listen to God, and we wait for the coming of Jesus into our lives again.

R: As we wait, hear these words from the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 35:1-10):

1 The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus,

2 it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;
they will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God.

3 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way;

4 say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come,
he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.”

5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped.

6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.

7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.

8 And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness;
it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it.

9 No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast;
they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there,

10 and those the Lord has rescued will return.
They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads.
Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

Reader: Isaiah talks about a time when the desert will bloom and people will sing with joy.

All: The blind will see, and the lame will leap and dance.

Reader: There will be a highway for God’s people to travel on, a place where no dangers wait.

All: It will be a place of joy.

Reader: God of joy, how wonderful Your promises are!
Help us to wait with patience, always trusting in you.
Amen.

*Scripture

Psalm 98:1-9 (NIV)

1 Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things;
his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him.

2 The Lord has made his salvation known
and revealed his righteousness to the nations.

3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel;
all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth,
burst into jubilant song with music;

5 make music to the Lord with the harp,
with the harp and the sound of singing,

6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn -
shout for joy before the Lord, the King.

7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it,
the world, and all who live in it.

8 Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy;

9 let them sing before the Lord, for he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.
