Call To Worship
Reader: Our Advent journey of listening and waiting continues.
All: We listen to God, and we wait for the coming of Jesus into our lives again.
R: As we wait, hear this promise from the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 11:1-5, 10):
1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse from his roots; a Branch will bear fruit.
2 The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord -
3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears;
4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
5 Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.
10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples;
the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.
R: Isaiah promised that someone was coming, someone upon whom the spirit of the Lord would rest.
All: Someone who would be wise and see that all people are treated fairly.
R: Someone who would establish a kingdom where all of God’s creatures would live together in peace.
All: In that kingdom, no one will hurt or destroy anything and everyone will know God.
God of peace, teach us to live in peace in our homes, in our schools and jobs,
in our community, and in our world. Amen.

Luke 2:8-11 (NIV)
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.
9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
